: welcome :
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I am very pleased to be writing you from the newly independent Antioch College.
I am continually impressed by the degree of energy and passion our alumni community devotes to the many new initiatives here at the College. Being in charge of our own destiny, while a daunting responsibility, is also a source of excitement and deep satisfaction.
We are focused on the development of the concept and curriculum of the College crafting a rigorous liberal arts education that is based on academic study, work and community governance with the belief that the combination of all three are vital to the full development of those who strive to win victories for humanity. Currently, our Morgan Fellows are visiting a many Alumni chapters around the country to exchange ideas about curriculum and future experiential learning opportunities.
In addition, the College has launched the first in a series of symposia. “The Daily Struggle of Immigrant Workers” was held on November 14th at the Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom on campus. As Morgan Fellow Anne Bohlen explained, “We are focusing on issues that have national importance and implications and also resonate within our own geographic community. The national immigration debates reverberate throughout Ohio.” All of the symposia will be available online.
Glen Helen has recently been featured in the Dayton Daily News . The article mentions that our Annual Fund goal of $2.5 million includes, for the very first time, funding for the Glen. Our goal is to restore the Glen to robust financial health, as it is a critical piece of Antioch College’s future success. We look forward to being able to further enhance Glen Helen’s programs and facilities.
Also of note, The Antioch
Review has published its Fall 2009 issue.
The cover story, “Geertz at Antioch,” will be of interest to Antiochians, as
will Editor Bob Fogarty’s editorial in which he talks about his latest project,
a collective biography of Antiochians between 1946 and 1959. Like Glen Helen, support
for the Review is also included
in the College’s Annual Fund for the first time. As one of the oldest and most
distinguished literary magazines in the country, I encourage you to subscribe
if you do not already do so.
While our endeavors to win the College back have been successful, the work to launch the new Antioch College now begins in earnest. We need your help. Please fill out a volunteer survey here, and our Manager of Volunteer Work will contact you about how you can put your expertise and time to work for Antioch College of the 21st century.
With warmest regards,
- Matthew Allen Derr ’89, Interim President
