Catalog Description

Continuing on-campus language teaching will be adapted to the needs of individuals and clusters of students, depending on their proficiency level at the conclusion of the intensives, as evaluated by the language faculty. Some offerings will look like traditional two-credit courses which meet two or three days a week and are taught by language faculty. Others will likely be two-credit group tutorials, using a native-speaker tutor.

Once again the emphasis will be on Talking & Expressing Oneself better and better, and each student will be pushed further and further in that direction. Students will, among others, continue to expand and refine the skills they learned in the previous two intensive courses such as Basic Greetings & Introductions, How to Say No, How to Make Requests, How to Talk about the Past, How to Talk about the Future, How to Argue, How to Express Likes & Dislikes, How to Talk about Hobbies, etc., as well as the corresponding grammatical tenses such as the Présent, Futur, Passé Composé, Impératif, etc. Debates, Writing & Talking fluently about one’s Weekends & Vacations, French Music & Short-to- Moderate-Length Movies, Audio Exercises & Recordings, More Vocabulary Expansion & Flashcard systems, as well as Graduated Reading Pieces, etc. will continue to be among the variety of tools we use in these continuing courses. New grammatical tenses will include the Conditionnel, the Imparfait, and the Subjonctif among others. A new tool called “My Achilles’ Heel” will be introduced as a means for the student to develop awareness of and keep track of his/her recurring mistakes & weaknesses and make documented efforts to improve in those areas as the term and year(s) move on.
