: Horace Mann Fellows Rights & Responsibilities:

The Horace Mann Fellows entering Antioch College in 2011 will constitute a special class of individuals. Along with an exceptional and historical set of opportunities comes a particular set of corresponding rights (or powers) and responsibilities. Among them are the following:

Academic Program

  1. The Fellows have the responsibility to attend class, complete all required work, participate in class in an actively engaged manner, and meet the academic standards of the College.

  2. The Fellows have the right to develop an individualized major around their academic needs and interests in consultation with Faculty Advisors.

Work Program

  1. The Fellows have the responsibility to perform 10 hours of work a week on campus and in the Yellow Springs community, and to take responsibility for the physical and environmental well-being of the community.

  2. The Fellows have the right to participate in college operations and to learn how the institution addresses its operational needs.

Community Life

  1. The Fellows have the responsibility to abide by community standards, such as the Honor Code and the Academic Honesty Policy.

  2. The Fellows have the right and power to help shape and participate in the defining of those community standards.

  3. The Fellows have the responsibility to engage in rational and civil discourse and dialogue in all aspects of community life, both in and out of the classroom.

  4. The Fellows have the right and power of academic freedom, freedom of speech, and of participating in discussion of all aspects of College life.

  5. The Fellows have the responsibility to strive hard to achieve a high degree of intercultural understanding and living, and to work toward developing an authentic, heterogeneous community.

  6. The Fellows have the right to have their own cultural identities respected and welcomed by others.

  7. The Fellows have the responsibility to understand and respect the boundaries and needs of others in the area of human relationships, in the residence halls, classroom, and work assignments.

  8. The Fellows have the right to be treated by others with respect, trust, and dignity.

Shared Governance

  1. The Fellows have the responsibility to learn the unique history of shared governance theory and practice at Antioch College, through a series of Community Meetings, workshops, and readings.

  2. The Fellows have the right and power to participate meaningfully and fully in the practices of shared governance, and to contribute to the shaping and developing of those practices.
