Help us remediate invasive species in the South Glen in 2012
The South Glen Restoration Project is a year-long initiative designed to clear invasive species along the Little Miami River in Glen Helen. Supported by the Nature Conservancy, Glen Helen has committed 5000 manpower hours to the effort over the course of the year, and we need a significant volunteer presence to help us clear the land of Amur Honeysuckle, Autumn Olive, Bittersweet, and other invasive species. From mid-March through December, we will run weekly volunteer work days, led by our Land Manager, project interns, and our Antioch College land steward Miller Fellow. Workdays are every Saturday, but on a reservation-only basis. Please read on for details and how to RSVP.
March 14: Invasive Plant Species in Midwestern Forests
Dr. Kendra Cipollini from Wilmington College will speak about the major invasive plant species invading Midwestern forests, their ecological effects on native ecosystems, and information on contemporary practices designed to control their spread. Glen Helen staff will be present for a question-and-answer period on the land management practices employed in the South Glen Restoration Project. Glen Helen Building Auditorium, 7-9pm. (No RSVP required.)
March 17: St. Patty’s Day Garlic Mustard Pull
Calling all episodic volunteers—a different way to get green! Come one, come all. We’ll gather for a brief overview of our current land management practices, and then carpool to the South Glen to hit the trail for a work-day with staffers and interns. Please wear your boots and work gloves, and bring your water bottle. Off-trail sites will be assigned to work crews, tools and training provided. Pizza too! Glen Helen Building auditorium, 9am-1pm. RSVP to bbryan@glenhelen.org (no limit on attendees).
