Description
On June 15, 2010, Antioch College’s Morgan Fellows organized a staged reading of letters written by students who participated in the 1964 Mississippi Summer Project.
Local high school and college-age youths read from the personal accounts of some of the 1,000 students, mostly under the direction of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, who faced beatings, harassment, jail and assassination as they organized voter registration drives and Freedom Schools in segregated Mississippi.
Letters Home From Freedom Summer was presented in conjunction with Oh Freedom Over Me, a multimedia traveling exhibition from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University which records scenes from Freedom Summer of 1964 when activists inspired the nation through their bold challenge of the entrenched racism of the state of Mississippi.
The exhibit, which runs through September 30 at Antioch College’s Herndon Gallery, features dramatic photographs by members of the Southern Documentary Project, video news footage, documentary audio and music from the civil rights movement.
