College positioned for growth and innovation; announces strategic leadership changes

Yellow Springs, OH | April 15, 2014—Antioch College President Mark Roosevelt today announced a strategic reorganization of the senior leadership team—a move that reduces his direct reports and brings together key job functions for increased synergy and efficiency. 

Vice President of Advancement Brian Williams will be leaving the College mid-May to join the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM)—a consortium of national liberal arts colleges focused on creating collaborative programs that enrich teaching and learning at its member colleges. As ACM’s vice president and director of faculty development and grant programs, Williams will be responsible for all aspects of the faculty development initiatives managed through the consortium, including securing and stewarding the grant awards that fund those initiatives. 

 “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of this amazing rebirth effort,” said Williams. “While I am excited about the new opportunity in front of me, I will miss the people with whom I have worked at Antioch and am confident that they and the College will continue to chart new paths in higher education.”

Roosevelt said that Brian’s departure, while disappointing, provided the opportunity to rethink the fundraising and communications job functions—specifically, how the College might streamline its outreach efforts to various constituencies, including alumni, employees, students, accrediting bodies, and other regulatory agencies.

Antioch’s Director of Institutional Effectiveness Jennifer Jolls—who has been with the College since 2011 when the first class of students arrived on campus—will become Vice President for External Relations. She will lead the overall strategy for advancement and communications, in addition to institutional effectiveness, research and planning.  

 “Jennifer has led our accreditation and strategic planning processes with great success,” said Roosevelt. “Now, I’m asking her to bring that same dedication and strategic approach to another critical function: fundraising. She has the skills, work ethic, and vision necessary—and the nontraditional approach we need—to take Antioch into the future.”  

Jolls holds an MA in Higher Education Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a BS degree in Public Relations and Marketing from the University of Central Missouri. Prior to joining Antioch College she served several roles at Columbia College, including Senior Director of Public Relations and Director of Marketing Strategy. 

Roosevelt also announced that Louise Smith, who has served as the College’s Dean of Community Life since 2011, will join the faculty this fall as an Associate Professor of Performance. The dean’s position will be reclassified as a Vice President for Student Success, with responsibility for admissions, financial aid, community life, residence life, and student success advising. A search will begin later this spring. 

“Performance is a passion close to Louise’s heart. I’m happy that she can pursue that passion here, helping to rebuild a program that she contributed so much to in earlier years.  She will leave big shoes to fill in community life,” said Roosevelt.

These changes follow a recent announcement about Vice President for Academic Affairs Hassan Rahmanian transitioning to a new role leading Antioch’s efforts in global education and subsequently, the search for a new chief academic officer.

Additional stages in the strategic reorganization, scheduled for later implementation, will include a new vice president to oversee the College’s curricular assets, including the Glen Helen Ecology Institute, the Antioch Farm, the Coretta Scott King Center, and WYSO public radio. As with the other structural adjustments, this position is intended to bring together key assets to encourage deeper connectivity and integration.

“These structural changes better position the College for the work ahead,” said Roosevelt. “We are an unusual organization, with multiple important assets and ambitions, and we need talented people eager to consolidate the progress that has been made and lead us in new directions.”
