Robert (Bob) Sasse Gelwicks, July 5. 1947 - Oct 9, 2011. Bob, a Santa Cruz resident for 30 years, died in Arlington, Virginia, on October 9 at the age of 64. Bob was born July 5, 1947, in Beijing, China. When Bob was 10, the Gelwicks family moved from Virginia to Japan, where he later graduated as valedictorian and class president from Narimasu High School, near Tokyo. Bob received his B.A. in Political Science from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and his M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling from San Francisco State University. Bob had a 35-year career with the California Department of Rehabilitation, where he helped disabled people train for and find employment, first as a counselor and then a supervisor. He retired in 2009. From a young age, Bob loved camping, hiking, and sports. He was an Eagle Scout, high school football and basketball player, and later, a triathlete. He helped coach his sons' youth soccer, baseball, and basketball teams and took great pleasure in watching them play. He and his wife enjoyed hiking the Sierra Nevada and Santa Cruz County trails together. Bob's other passions were music, reading, and taking photographs of the people and places he loved. Bob is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Ann Dewey; their three sons, Jesse (Erin Brasell) of Portland, Eric of San Francisco, and Graham of Los Angeles; one grandchild, Miles; and two sisters: Jean Gelwicks of British Columbia and Judy Gelwicks of Gilroy. A gathering to remember Bob is being planned in Santa Cruz and will be announced as soon as details are finalized. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's memory may be made to Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund.
