Obituary: Amanda Bailey '72

Amanda Bailey fell in love with horses when she was 8 years old and they were her passion for the rest of her life! Amanda was born April 3, 1949 in Eugene, OR and died in Phoenix, AZ on June 28, 2012, from liver disease. Amanda grew up in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, leaving the East Coast to attend Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Always adventurous, her education was put on hold to travel and she arrived in Taos in 1971 to visit her parents. Ever resourceful, Amanda had a variety of jobs before settling down and marrying Dennis Olonia in 1980. Their son, Salvador, was born January 11, 1981. Though they divorced, Dennis and Amanda remained life-long friends. Later, Amanda married Tom Blankenhorn and, together with their children, Sal, Sara and Liz, they had lots of exciting adventures, traveling extensively. Amanda received her B.S. from UNM and began a career in education, teaching math and science at Taos Valley School, Taos Junior High, Taos High School and several Charter Schools. In 1998, Amanda began a second career combining her love for animals and a retail store when she opened "Taos Tack and Pet Supply." She was active in the Sangre de Cristo Horseman's Association and the Taos Saddle Club, winning numerous blue ribbons in competitions. Amanda had many interests and loved to ride her horse, read, garden, hike, camp, and ski. Amanda is survived by her sister, Fay (Robert) Jones, Seattle, WA, and her twin brothers Mark (Martha) Bailey, Mount Airy, MD, and Matthew (Kate) Bailey, Somers Point, NJ.
