Obituary: Gudrun K. "Goody" Tolles '37

Gudrun K. "Goody" Tolles, 99, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Kendal at Lexington. Born June 11, 1913, in Indiana, she was a daughter of John W. Kercher and Gudrun Carlson Kercher. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Tolles. She grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and majored in English at Antioch College, where she met her husband. The couple moved to the University of Minnesota so Walter could pursue a graduate degree in biophysics. Shortly after December 1941, they moved to Long Island, N.Y., so that Walter could work on the development of anti-submarine devices. For a time, Goody commuted to Manhattan to work at McGraw Hill publishers. Walter later entered New York Downstate Medical Center, first as a graduate student in biophysics, then as a member of the faculty. He retired in 1977. The couple then retired to Rockbridge County. Walter died in 1993 and Goody's next move was to her cottage at Kendal. She is survived by a daughter, four grown granddaughters and 10 great grandchildren, all in Texas. She volunteered with the hospital auxiliary, the public library, arboretums and garden clubs. She enjoyed reading and playing the piano. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no memorial service. Memorial donations may be made to Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers St., Lexington, VA 24450. Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory
