Randall E. Betsher '49

Randall E. Betsher, a resident of Reeds Landing Lifecare Community since 2000, died on Wednesday, September 11, 2013. Born in Eureka, Kansas on March 1, 1923, a son of the late William H. and Mabel (Gould) Betsher, he has resided in Massachusetts since 1952. After attending college for one year, he entered the U. S. Army Air Force. He was trained as a weather observer stationed in Nebraska and then to the CBI theater of Operations where he was stationed in India and China. He was in China on VE Day and also on VJ day. He circumnavigated the world having left from California traveling south below New Zealand and Australia to Bombay India and returning from China via Calcutta India through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean to New York where he was discharged as a Sergeant. He was a graduate of Antioch College and became a Certified Public Accountant. He was employed by Scovell, Wellington, which became Lybrand, Ross Bros. & Montgomery, which became Coopers and Lybrand, which became PriceWater-houseCoopers. He was a director of financial planning specializing in estate planning and gift taxation, trust income taxes, valuation of closely held businesses and was a frequent speaker at firm tax conference. He represented clients before the Internal Revenue Service, he retired in 1988. He and his family were members of Christ Church Cathedral for over 50 years. He was treasurer for 29 years, was a Junior Warden and Senior Warden, Chairman of the Finance Committee. At Reeds Landing he was a member of the Residents Council, chairman of the Reeds Landing Residents Finance Committee and enjoyed a non-voting seat on the Corporate Finance Committee. He was a member of the Reeds Landing foundation Board of Directors. He was a founding member of the Estate Planning Council of Hampden County and remains an Honorary Member. His beloved wife, Anaise A. (Blanchard) Betsher predeceased him in 2001 after 54 years of marriage. He leaves 3 sons, 2 daughters, 5 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters. G. Daniel Betsher and wife Cynthia, residing in Towson, MD and their son Christopher residing in Orlando, FL and their daughter Heather, her husband John Moretz and their daughters Kaitlyn and Brooke residing in Street, MD. Daughter, Linda B. LaMontagne residing in Torrington, CT, her son James LaMontagne residing in Boston, MA and her son Kevin LaMontagne residing in Ponte Vedra, FL., Son, Mark R. Betsher and wife Sarah Wheeler and daughter Rachel Wheeler residing in Springfield, MA. Daughter, Barbara A. Betsher, a registered nurse residing in Quincy, MA, and son Scott A. Betsher, a CPA and wife Mary LeClair-Betsher residing in Southwick, MA; sister Betty Glotzbach of Evans, GA. Family and friends will meet for Randall's funeral service on Monday, September 16, at 10 a.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 35 Chestnut St., Springfield, MA 01103. Committal Rites and burial at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be private. Calling hours for Randall will be held on Sunday, September 15, from 2-6 p.m. at Hafey Springfield Chapels, 494 Belmont Avenue.
