Richard Mills Lagergren '46

Wilmington, DE – Richard Mills Lagergren, age 90, died on May 17, 2014 after a long illness at Stonegates Healthcare where he had resided for the last five years. Dick grew up in Nutley, NJ and was the son of Alan and Kathryn Lagergren. He graduated from Nutley High School where he met his future wife, Gloria Mitchell Lagergren. He attended Antioch College before joining the U.S. Naval Air Corps in WWII. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1949 with a B.S. in Business Administration. He worked for Continental American Life Insurance Company from 1949 until he retired in 1984, first as Assistant Treasurer and then as Treasurer. He was a Fellow of the Life Office Management Association. Dick was an active member of the Delaware GOP; Treasurer and Vestry Member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church; Board Member of Block Blight, Inc.; Member of New Castle County Board of Assessment Review; Member of the United Community Fund; and Board Member of the Delaware Swedish Colonial Society. He enjoyed antique and classic automobiles and machinery; antique furniture collecting and refinishing; and photography. He and Gloria traveled extensively to Europe with groups from Winterthur Museum. In retirement, he enjoyed attending classes at the UD Academy of Lifelong Learning. Dick was known for his quick wit and delightful sense of humor. In addition to his parents, Dick is preceded in death by his sister Elizabeth Kelsey and brother Alan Lagergren of Barrington, RI. He is survived by Gloria, his wife of 68 years; his two daughters Kristin Ledden (Edward) of Wilmington, DE and Nancy Charamella (Robert) of Columbia, MD; and brother John Lagergren of Hampton, VA. He is also survived by his six grandchildren: Lauren Kolazas (Andreas) of Arlington, VA; Vanessa Schneider (Rodee) of Appleton, WI; Robin Bailey of Kearny, NJ; Rebecca Ledden of Wilmington, DE; Michael Charamella of Thimphu, Bhutan; and Matthew Charamella (Kerry) of Lima, Peru. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren: Stellan and Oliver Kolazas and Mieke Schneider. Dick's family would like to thank the entire staff of Stonegates Healthcare for their compassionate and loving care. Services and burial will be private.
