12 - 1 pm The Morgan Fellows Present The Gegner Barbershop Incident: Fighting for Civil Rights in Yellow Springs

Herndon Gallery, One Morgan Place, Antioch College

Stories From Activists Who Fought to Desegregate Yellow Springs:
In 1961 Yellow Springs residents filed a lawsuit against local barber Lewis Gegner for his refusal to cut the hair of black townspeople and students. Gegner's continued intransigence, and the consistent lack of action on the part of the Greene County Court of Appeals, led to years of litigation, protests, and sit-ins, culminating in the dramatic civil rights demonstration of 1964 that resulted in over 100 arrests and national media coverage. While Lewis Gegner ultimately closed his barbershop rather than desegregate his business, the demonstration and its aftermath marked the end of de facto segregation in Yellow Springs.

This is an open meeting to discuss the project in the Herndon Gallery. Emeritus faculty member Al Denman and alumna Jennifer Berman ‘84 co-chair this Taskforce, comprised of former CM’s from across the generations and charged with preparing the background and materials necessary for a yearlong campus program on community governance.

Interim President Matthew Derr stated that his hope is "that this group will serve for two years and continue to assist the community with the development of a model of community governance that honors our values and legacy, and acknowledges the agency and creative potential of the community of students, faculty, staff and administration of 2011 and beyond."

"The “Three C’s” have each been critical educational components to the accomplishments of Antioch College alumni across the generations. The relationship between the program we are now developing and a commitment to community governance as genuine and practical experience are critical to its eventual success."
