Joey Hill ’89 Romances Antioch College

Joey Hill ’89 says laughingly, “Sometimes people look at me blankly when I tell them about my books.” She is the author of four series of erotic romances, both paranormal and contemporary. Her two paranormal series are the Daughters of Arianne and the Vampire Queen series. Her contemporary series are Knights of the Board Room and Nature of Desire. “Most all of my work explores the nature of unconditional love,” she says. “My paranormal work also delves into the shades of gray within good and evil. Being Wiccan, a faith which believes in the sacred magic of sexuality, I also like the fact that the eroticism of my books can be used to heal my characters, as well as bond them even more closely together.”

Tim Lachman '64 Focuses on Teaching and Fighting for Single Payer Healthcare

After a long career in private practice, Tim Lachman '64 missed the teaching that he was exposed to and switched over from private practice to a faculty position at Temple University, where he is an assistant professor in Neurology. "It's a very good decision," he said recently. "I'm much more content teaching medical students and residents. It's been a good transition . . . Mostly people go from the academic world into private practice, and this was a reverse move." He's also been involved in the movement for national single-payer healthcare for decades. "I was an odd person in my medical class because I had progressive views," he said, "but I didn't hook up with an organization until the late 80s, Physicians for National Health Program, so I joined and been a constant member and support their goals." He continues, "In Philadelphia we have a community organization that generates actions, educational and demonstrations, to support national single-payer healthcare. So it's kept me pretty busy!" He laughs, "We've been working in the dark for a long time. A lot of publicity has come about for the single payer healthcare in the past few months. It's a good feeling but disappointment that the people are ahead of the politicians."

Songs from the Stacks

--by Scott Sanders, Archivist

It's great to be back in Antiochiana as your College Archivist. Now that Antioch College is back, donations have begun to flow into the archives once again now that independence has been achieved. Starting with the Alumni Reunion in October, several interesting gifts have been given to Antiochiana, including:

A felt Antioch banner with gold lettering on a dark blue field, circa 1930, was the gift of Matthew Derr, class of 1989. The large block type makes it reminiscent of the kind of thing used to cheer on a football team, something Antioch College hasn't had since 1928.

Morgan Fellows Host Symposium: Native American Identity and Representation

On Saturday, January 23, 2010, Antioch College’s Morgan Fellows will host the second in a series of monthly symposia focusing on issues in higher education and society. The topic of this event will be “Native American Identity and Representation,” and will take place in the Herndon Gallery at Antioch College, One Morgan Place, Yellow Springs, Ohio, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm with a reception to follow.

“The identities of Native Americans are inherently linked to landscape, relatives, and language,” says Beverly Rodgers, Ph.D., one of four Arthur Morgan Fellows at Antioch College. Even when relatives have gone on, the land degraded, and language fallen into disuse, these elements continue to form the context of identity for most Native Peoples. In representing these identities, indigenous writers, artists, and cultural workers face the dual necessities of educating a broader public to see past deeply rooted stereotypes of Native Peoples and creating awareness of the variety of Native experiences and realities. This has also meant a heightened interest in mixed blood, hybrid, and multiple identities, and in the increasingly common urbanized Native realities.
